Defining and Maintaining a Bill of Material

Two online conversations can be used to maintain bills of material:

·     Multi-Line Product Structure Maintenance.  The multi-line screen allows you to enter all of the item's components on a separate line of the same screen.  Required information (such as quantity per and effectivity date) is displayed on this screen for each component.  A detail screen allows you to maintain additional information for each component; the detail screen can be accessed from the multi-line screen via a function key.  You can also enter up to 99 lines of comments for each component line on the product structure.  To access the comments screen, you press a function key from the detail screen.

·     Product Structure Maintenance.  This conversation displays the detail screen related to an individual parent/component relationship.  It also allows you to copy a bill of material that has already been set up.  In addition, you can enter up to 99 lines of comments for each parent/component relationship.  To access the comments screen, you press a function key from the detail screen.

In general, you should use the Multi-Line Product Structure Maintenance conversation to create a new bill of material.  Once a bill has been established, the Product Structure Maintenance conversation is an efficient tool for copying that bill for other parts or for changing an individual parent/component relationship on the bill.

You may not change the deduct operation on any JIT part whose part master and bill of material records have been copied from another part.  In this case, you need to delete the existing component record from the bill of material then add it again with the new deduct operation.  This procedure creates a new revision level for the parent part.

A mass change facility lets you replace one component with another in every product structure where it is used and/or modify the quantity per batch relationship.
