New IBM Power 6 Architecture Benefits MAC-PAC XE™ Users

MAPSYS Offers Free Analysis for TDCI Customers

This year, IBM celebrates the 20th anniversary of the AS/400 midrange computer, originally released in 1988.  The hardware and operating system have had a few different names over the years (AS/400, iSeries, System i, and OS/400, i5/OS etc.) and it is still going strong.  IBM recently announced the latest platform details - the hardware is now called “Power” and the operating system is now called “IBM i".  No matter what name it has, it remains a great platform for MAC-PAC XE. A few of the latest announcements include:

  • Power hardware now allows external storage.  MAC-PAC XE customers may be able to leverage an existing SAN storage device, or this could help cost justify the implementation of a SAN that could be used to house the data from multiple platforms (e.g. AS/400 and Intel).
  • The IBM i (i5/OS) operating system now runs on Blade servers.
  • 9406-550 servers have a no-charge upgrade path to Power 550 until July 8.  MAPSYS can implement this upgrade quickly for TDCI customers.
  • 9406-570 upgrade paths to Power 570 now exist.
  • The latest operating system is v6.1 and there are many enhancements including better performance and more virtualization capabilities.
  • i5/OS v5r3 was withdrawn from market January 3, 2008 and support will be withdrawn April 30, 2009.  There are easy ways to upgrade the OS with minimal downtime – again, MAPSYS can help TDCI customers with this.
  • System i and System p have converged to a single hardware platform now called Power.

TDCI partners exclusively with MAPSYS, Inc. to provide MAC-PAC XE customers with IBM hardware solutions.  As an example of what’s possible, one company will save over $750,000 over the next 5 years, while increasing their computing power, by implementing a MAPSYS solution.  The MAPSYS promise is that if they cannot deliver a solution that adds value to an organization, they will not ask for the business partnership.
