Lot Control

Lot Control allows you to identify items by lot.  You identify whether or not a part will be lot-controlled on the Control screen within the Part Master Maintenance conversation.  Note that you will only be able to use lot control for a part if the Lot Control flag on the Inventory Control Application System Control File record is set to Yes.  This flag is set using the Application System Control Maintenance menu option on the Material Planning Menu.

When a purchased or manufactured item is received, it is assigned to a specific lot in a specific location.  Inventory balances are displayed by lot for lot-controlled items.  A lot trace inquiry allows you to view every parent part to which a lot-controlled component was issued, and every sales order against which a lot-controlled item was shipped.

A further degree of lot control is possible.  If you specify that a part should be lot assignable, rather than lot controlled, all of the lot control features apply to it.  In addition, you will be able to allocate items by lot when customer orders are received.  You will be able to maintain a list of quality control specifications that identify key features of each lot.  In addition, you will be able to define the customer/item relationship so that you know which features the customer typically values for the part.  During order entry, the specifications for the lot (and the customer's preferences) are displayed for lot-assignable items to help order entry personnel allocate inventory.

For further information about lot control and lot assignability, see the Inventory Control and Order Processing user manuals.
