Enter Part Comments

You can maintain up to 99 lines of comments for a part on the Part Comments File.  Each line is stored as a separate record on the file.  The comments are entered and maintained through the Part Comments Maintenance conversation.  This conversation does not offer any word processing features, such as word wrap or spell checking.

In addition to entering comments in the Part Comments conversation, you can use the Bill of Documents module to associate parts with documents stored on your Office word processing system.  Using Bill of Documents allows you to take advantage of word processing features and to associate the same document with more than one part.  For more information, see the Bill of Documents User Manual.

To maintain part comments within Design Engineering:

1.   Select the Part Comments Maintenance option.

2.   Enter the number of the part whose comments you want to maintain.

3.   To add a comment line:

a.   If you will be inserting the line between two existing lines, check to make sure that the Sqnce fields for those two lines differ by at least one.  If necessary:

·     Change the sequence numbers for the lines by typing over the existing numbers, or

·     Press F18 to reassign sequence numbers to all lines in intervals of 10 (10, 20, ...), or

·     Enter a number in the Renumber By field and press F18 to reassign sequence numbers using an increment other than 10.  For example, to assign the numbers 5, 10, 15, ..., enter a 5 in the Renumber By field and press F18.

b.   Type the text on any of the blank lines displayed.  If no blank lines are displayed, page to the next screen.

c.   Use the Sqnce field to specify where the line should be inserted.

d.   Press ENTER to refresh the screen with your changes.  Press F19 to update the file with changes.

Note:    Pressing ENTER to update the screen, then pressing F3 to exit will NOT update the file for any changes; you must press F19 to save comments.

Hint:     If you are entering several comment lines, press F4 to restrict data entry to the Text column.  Pressing ENTER after you finish a line will move the cursor to the beginning of the next comment line, skipping over the control fields on the right of the screen.  After you are done entering the text, press F4 again to enter data in the other fields.

4.   To change a comment line:

a.   Type over the existing text.

b.   Press F19 to update the file.

5.   To rearrange comment lines:

a.   Type over the existing numbers in the Sqnce fields to indicate the new order.

b.   Press ENTER to update the screen or F19 to update the file.

6.   To delete a comment line:

a.   Type any character in the D field.

b.   Press ENTER to update the screen or F19 to update the file.

7.   To copy comments from another part:

a.   Enter the second part's part number and plant at the top of the screen.

b.   Press F8.  All comments for the second part will be copied behind the current comments.
